Going downtown |
Description: |
A westbound CR train has cut off its train at BD, and is taking the power, a pair of SD 40s and a GP 38, down to QD to work the Erie yard. This was my first visit to Binghamton, and I was not familiar with the symbols then; there were several trains that ran the line from Jersey to points west. A few years later, that would be trimmed to two, OIEL and OIBU. I would guess this would be OIBU, or something similar, as it showed in the afternoon, which was its usual time slot. |

Approaching Binghamton |
Description: |
An intermodal train, Im guessing TV 78, about to roll into Johnson City on its approach to Binghamton. This area has seen a lot of change over the years. River Plaza to the left of the lead unit, has been mostly empty for years. The GE building above the train is now BAE Systems. To its right is now a Home Depot. The smokestack above the lead unit belongs to NYSEG's Goudy plant, a long time Conrail customer. It closed around 2005. Of course, Conrail itself is now a memory. |

Eastbound in the snow |

Anywhere else, March would be a time of anticipation, as the world throws off the burdens of winter. Not so in upstate NY, where its just another month of snow and cold. BUOI is used to it, and is getting a good start on a trip down the Delaware Division to Jersey, here passing BD on the way out of town. It will be an easy trip, as the 44 cars in the train won't tax the power of the three units doing the work. |

Like many rail facilities that became underused, the ex DLW YO yard became overgrown. The were only a couple of tracks left which served the Agway feed mill, seen at right. WABH 11 had the task of servicing the customer, which we see here. The boxcars were filled with grain, also a relic of the past. It would continue a few more years, and sometimes some real classics would show up. On at least one occasion I saw Erie cars here. |

CR goes, D&H waits |
Description: |
That was the way it always happened, even if it stabbed the D&H. In this case, CR is doing it right, as the northbound coming out of the yard will take a while to clear BD and the speed restricted curve going up to Bevier St. OIBU passes BD and will quickly be working the yard while PYRP takes its time. |

Upgrade |
Description: |
When I first moved to the Binghamton area, and for a number of years before that, I usually saw GP 38s or B23-7s on WABH 11. Late in 1988, there were GP 40s assigned, though they did not stay permanently til a few years later. Heres one working on the ex DLW, bringing some cars back from National Pipe in Vestal. The abandoned tracks in the ground served the Kilmer Building, out of view on the left. |

Competition |
Description: |
As a former truck driver, I could not resist this shot. OIBU makes its way along Court St, passing BD on its way into town. Look at that classic Freightliner. |

Downtown |
Description: |
The Freightliner and OIBU have gone their separate ways, with the train showing up at the yard as predicted, though it seems to have startled the birds that make a living off the grain shaken from the cars going to Agway. It strikes a classic Binghamton pose as it works the yard. |

Setting off |
Description: |
On one of those rare days when ELOI runs east of Gang Mills, it sets off its Binghamton cars at Liberty St. It will pull back out and couple to the rest of its train and head east. The home signal is the eastbound signal on track 2 at BD. |

Down the main |
Description: |
WABH 11 rolls down the DLW main, now reaching west BD-see the signal above the engine-where it will get onto the remaining part of the DLW main to get back to downtown Binghamton. The empties will either be picked up by OIBU or OIEL, or if there is a whole train(90 cars) and a UNG coming, that power will turn with them. |

On the water |
Description: |
OIBU pulls out from Binghamton, crossing the Chenango River on the ex Erie bridge, adjacent to my vantage point on the ex Lackawanna bridge. Both are still in use in 2015. That's the old Erie freight house(red brick front) beyond the overpass. |

TV 300 rolls east past Willow Run Foods and the Kirkwood water plant, passing MP 209. The B36-7s are a common sight on this train, as are the GP 40s. Todays train has the class unit trailing. |
