116 Cars Westbound |
Description: |
Union Pacific 4001 lugs a 116 car train uphill at Riview. Riview is located just west of Green River, where trains begin the climb to Evanston further west. The Ogden-bound train is made up of 11 cars loaded with coal, followed by a lengthy string of empty reefers. Trains heading west on the Wyoming Division often had empty reefers. These cars would then be loaded and returned east. Obtained from Union Pacific Steam: Big Boy Portraits (Bush, Ehernberger) |

UP 4001 |
Description: |
UP 4001 gets some brief R&R in Green River. A worker inspects the pistons while another loads coal into the centipede tender. World War 2 has begun, and regular cleaning of the engines has mostly stopped, as they are constantly on the move, shuttling troops and supplies across the Wasatch range.
