CSRX 2-6-2 #108 - Conway Scenic Rwy |
| Description: |
Rail fan Jim Lockart caught this beautifully restored Baldwin 2-6-2 Prairie type steam locomotive in action with the tourist train at North Conway, NH. Built in January of 1920 (sr 52820, it was originally San Augustine Cnty Lumber Co #108 and became Angelina & Naches River RR 108 until 1954.. Sold to Reader RR as their #108 in 1956 where it was rebuiilt with 47" drivers and 18x24" cylinders. Eventually it was sold to Conway Scenic in 1976 and in service until 1986. Due to mechanical issues and being an expensive oil burner, the loco was never rebuilt. It was finally sold in 1999 to the Rannoch Corporation in Texas and then to the Robbins Rail Museum where it sits in parts today. |

A long way from home, then a short trip |
| Description: |
Sometimes you think youre going to get a lot of railroad, but things dont quite work out that way. I was visiting family in Georgia, and had a couple of days while my wife and some of the gals went to Pigeon Forge, so I thought Id get up on the e Southern Rathole to check out the action. I got to Dayton Tenn, and saw that getting through town was going to be a challenge. And there was a southbound waiting to move after getting a signal. I chased to the next town, Bakewell, and to him passing the signal there with 78 freight, and 12 autoracks behind its two units. Id spend the day between here and Dayton. Saw 7 trains. The skies were gray all day, which sucked-I HATE when I go somewhere I never get to go, and the weather sucks, especially after the prediction was for 70 and sun. But, a bad day train watching..... |

Dayton was a good place to sit: an easi;y checked signal, and good sight lines for a southbound, and bathrooms nearby, important for an old guy on diuretics. It proved to be a fruitful day. When I got back from the first chase, this southbound was sitting at the north end of town. The signal must have just cleared, as he started moving just as I took up my position. A pair of GE's lead 103 freight and 43 auto racks south. |
