Amtrak 36-seat dining car 8500 was on the westbound SUNSET leaving New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal. The car had been built by Pullman-Standers in 1949 as Southern Pacific 10204 for operation on the OVERLAND. It was purchased by Amtrak for “limited service” in 1974 and was retired in November 1977. |

CB&Q 48 seat diner #194 SILVER DINER (Budd, Lot #9624-019, November 1948), built for the CALIFORNIA ZEPHYR, to BN via merger in March 1970, planned as BN #1158, which was not applied, sold in 1971 to Amtrak as #8051, converted from steam heat to head end power (HEP) in September 1979 as #8500 (40 seats), reconfigured in January 1987 to griddle diner #8551 (48 seats), retired in June 2016 and resold at auction in January 2019 to the Fort Wayne RR Historical Society. Scanned with an Epson V550 from a duplicate 35mm slide, brand is unknown. Date and photographer are unknown. |
