Built in 1916 by Alco-Schenectady, this behemouth was an EL-2 class with 58" drivers. It's high pressure cylinders were 26"x31" while its low pressure cylinders were 41"x31" (diameter & stroke). The total engine weight tipped the scales at 485,600 and it was able to generate a tractive effort of 91,993 lb. Rebuilt to simple (four 24X32 cylinders) by B&O shops between 1930-42, the entire class was retired by 1954. |
