UPY 855 was delivered to Missouri Pacific as an SD40-2 but the lack of dynamic brakes made this locomotive unsuitable for UP's mountainous terrain. Instead of being removed from the roster UP rebuilt this EMD into an SD38-2 along with several other former Mopac SD40-2s and assigned them to yard and hump duty. In this photo a former SD40-2 turned SD38-2 and an SD60 combine their 5,800 horsepower to move a long line of freight cars in Davidson Yard. |
