Coming out of the afternoon sun, Louisville & Nashville 4-6-2 245 powers train No. 10 across the Southern Railway main line at NO&NE Tower (milepost 802.7). Just a few years after this photo was taken, NO&NE Tower was replaced with a new brick structure named N.E. Tower. At about the same time, train No. 10 was discontinued. The 245 was the last of six K-5 class light Pacifics (240-245) assigned to the L&N by the United States Railroad Administration during the First World War. It was built by Alco-Richmond in 1919 and retired on 22 June 1954. (approximate day of photo) |
