At 7:35 on a Wednesday morning F40 258, E9A 420 and E9B 473 were leading the northbound CRESCENT across Lake Pontchartrain on the Southern Railway. This was a typical set of power between the summer of 1979, when Amtrak’s lease on the Southern Railway E8A’s expired, and the conversion of the train to head-end power (HEP) a year later. |
