BYC. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide of a photo by Fred Kern that was taken just West of the Brick Yard Crossing in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 23 July 1955. Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #9452 and a "C-Liner" B-unit whose number is not recorded. Both are FF-16's built by Fairbanks-Morse and rated at 1,600 horsepower each. #9452 was built in September of 1950 and retired in April of 1965 after just 15 years of revenue service. They are braking a mixed-cargo freight train down the Allegheny Mountains to the Eastbound Receiving Yards in Altoona. |
